ARM-Based MacBook Air Unlikely Based on Analyst Talk with Tim Cook

Sat, 2012-02-04 18:24
There had been some a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/05/27/apple-testing-an-arm-a5-powered-macbook-air/"interesting/a a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/05/06/apple-to-move-from-intel-to-arm-processors-in-future-laptops/"claims/a last year that Apple had been actively testing an ARM (A5) based MacBook Air. The ARM processor is the same one that is used in the iPhone and iPad. An ARM-based MacBook Air, however, would raise a number of questions about what kind of device it might actually be. Would it run OS X, or iOS? Would it be closer to a Mac or an iOS device? One of the main advantages of using an ARM processor would be a reduction in power-requirements, but with a corresponding drop in computing power. Using ARM, however, would abandon binary compatibility with existing Mac OS X applications. br/ br/ centerimg src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2011/05/1392481298.jpg"/center br/ a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-57371409-64/ipad-like-macbook-air-now-unlikely-was-it-even-necessary/"CNet reports/a on a research note from Citigroup analyst Richard Gardner who was able to meet with Apple CEO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer on Thursday. Gardner addresses this question in his note with the following:blockquote"Tim Cook reiterated his view that rapid innovation on the iOS platform (and mobile OS platforms in general) will significantly broaden the use case for tablets, eventually pushing annual tablet volumes above those of traditional PCs. We have wondered whether Apple might offer an ARM-based version of MacBook Air at some point; we walked away from this meeting with the impression that Apple feels iPad satisfies--or will soon satisfy--the needs of those who might have been interested in such a product."/blockquoteBased on his conversations with the Apple executives, it seems Gardner believes that the iPad will evolve to meet any needs that might be met with an ARM-based MacBook air. br/ br/ Rumors have suggested that the iPad will likely be getting a significant upgrade in the near future, with a faster processor, improved graphics capabilities and the long rumored Retina display. Of course, Cook is unlikely to divulge specific product plans at analyst meetings, but a complete Apple transition to ARM processors seemed an unlikely prospect regardless. br/ br/ br/ bRecent Mac and iOS Blog Stories/bbr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/03/apple-releases-ibooks-2-0-1-to-address-issue-with-textbooks-not-opening/"Apple Releases iBooks 2.0.1 to Address Issue with Textbooks Not Opening/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/id-softwares-rage-arrives-on-mac-app-store/"Id Software#039;s RAGE Arrives on Mac App Store/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/the-daily-reports-100000-paying-subs-on-one-year-anniverary/"#039;The Daily#039; Reports 100,000 Paying Subs on One-Year Anniversary/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/safari-5-1-4-with-javascript-and-pdf-handling-improvements-seeded-to-developers/"Safari 5.1.4 with JavaScript and PDF Handling Improvements Seeded to Developers/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/apple-grabs-another-gaming-pr-executive-for-app-store/"Apple Grabs Another Gaming PR Executive for App Store/abr/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/IHIZldjHrj2zAT8KPmrRJ4GofAw/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/IHIZldjHrj2zAT8KPmrRJ4GofAw/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/IHIZldjHrj2zAT8KPmrRJ4GofAw/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/IHIZldjHrj2zAT8KPmrRJ4GofAw/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=KCiHljuNfmM:xFVb7CApsNw:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=KCiHljuNfmM:xFVb7CApsNw:6W8y8wAjSf4"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=6W8y8wAjSf4" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=KCiHljuNfmM:xFVb7CApsNw:qj6IDK7rITs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/MacRumors-Front/~4/KCiHljuNfmM" height="1" width="1"/

ATT Starts Throttling Unlimited Data Users after 2GB of Monthly Usage

Sat, 2012-02-04 17:24
img src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/02/photo.jpg" alt="" title="photo" width="250" class="alignright size-full wp-image-335629" /In October, ATT a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/07/29/att-to-throttle-unlimited-data-plan-customers-starting-in-october/"announced/a that they would start throttling data usage amongst mobile Unlimited Data Plan users. While ATT no longer offers an Unlimited Data plan to new customers, many of the original iPhone purchasers are still grandfathered into that plan. Those iPhone users have been able to retain these Unlimited plans, even though ATT has since moved to a A href="http://www.macrumors.com/2010/06/02/atandt-announces-iphone-tethering-and-new-smartphone-data-plans/"tiered/a data plan structure. br/ br/ When ATT announced their plan to start throttling users, the company said that they would only be throttling the top 5% of users. a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/30/att-begins-warning-high-volume-data-users-of-upcoming-throttling/"Early reports/a of affected users had pointed to 10GB-12GB per month users as the initially affected. br/ br/ It seems that ceiling has decreased significantly over the past few months, at least for some regions. a href="http://www.johncozen.com/2012/02/att-throttling-unlimited-plans-after-2gb-data/"John Cozen/a reports that he received his top 5% data usage warning after reaching only 2.1GB of data for January. blockquoteI received a message during my last billing cycle, warning I was in the top 5% of my region and would experience reduced data speeds next time I reach that level of data use. I immediately checked my data usage on the ATT iOS app. br/ br/ 2.1 GB. Less than I expected considering ATT offers a 3GB plan for #36;30 a month. The same amount I’ve paid for the unlimited data plan since signing up with them many years ago. ATT no longer offers an unlimited data plan, anyone still on it has been grandfathered in./blockquoteCozen contacted ATT to make sure it wasn't a mistake, and after several back and forth exchanges, it seems clear that it wasn't a mistake. The ATT representatives seemed to confirm that 2.1GB did fall in the 5% range and the only option to avoid throttling was to move to a tiered plan. br/ br/ Cozen was understandably upset since ATT even offers an unthrottled 3GB plan for the same price he is paying at #36;30 month. br/ br/ ATT's top 5% measurement seems to be region-specific, as some users are continuing to see higher than 2GB usage without throttling.br/ br/ br/ bRecent Mac and iOS Blog Stories/bbr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/03/apple-releases-ibooks-2-0-1-to-address-issue-with-textbooks-not-opening/"Apple Releases iBooks 2.0.1 to Address Issue with Textbooks Not Opening/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/id-softwares-rage-arrives-on-mac-app-store/"Id Software#039;s RAGE Arrives on Mac App Store/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/the-daily-reports-100000-paying-subs-on-one-year-anniverary/"#039;The Daily#039; Reports 100,000 Paying Subs on One-Year Anniversary/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/safari-5-1-4-with-javascript-and-pdf-handling-improvements-seeded-to-developers/"Safari 5.1.4 with JavaScript and PDF Handling Improvements Seeded to Developers/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/apple-grabs-another-gaming-pr-executive-for-app-store/"Apple Grabs Another Gaming PR Executive for App Store/abr/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/H9JM5Dbk62GVTkf2IM-BzxoWA50/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/H9JM5Dbk62GVTkf2IM-BzxoWA50/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/H9JM5Dbk62GVTkf2IM-BzxoWA50/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/H9JM5Dbk62GVTkf2IM-BzxoWA50/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=YWYHxlMUebY:S0yUg8MqGv8:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=YWYHxlMUebY:S0yUg8MqGv8:6W8y8wAjSf4"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=6W8y8wAjSf4" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=YWYHxlMUebY:S0yUg8MqGv8:qj6IDK7rITs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/MacRumors-Front/~4/YWYHxlMUebY" height="1" width="1"/

Apple Revises Snow Leopard Security Update and Pulls 10.7.3 Delta Update

Genius Recommendations for Movies and TV Shows Appearing on Apple TV

Several Apple TV users have a href="http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1318755"reported/a a new addition to the menus of their devices, with the new option bringing Genius recommendations for movies and TV shows in their libraries. Apple Clarifies iBooks Author Licensing Situation in New Software Update

Fri, 2012-02-03 15:01
img src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/02/ibooks_author_icon-150x150.jpg" alt="" title="ibooks_author_icon" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-335588" /Following Apple's release of a href="http://appshopper.com/mac/productivity/ibooks-author"iBooks Author/a last month to support creation of iBooks Textbooks, significant a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/19/a-closer-look-at-ibooks-author-textbooks-and-exclusivity/"controversy/a arose regarding the software's licensing, which specified that the output from the software could only be sold via the iBookstore and not any other marketplace. br/ br/ Some confusion had resulted from Apple's language, with some believing that Apple was claiming rights to all content used in the production of the iBooks Textbooks, perhaps attempting to exclude books from being published in any other form. br/ br/ Apple has now addressed the issue by releasing an update to iBooks Author that includes a modified licensing agreement to clarify that Apple claims rights only to the .ibooks document format itself, with authors being free to distribute their content in non-.ibooks formats however they wish. br/ br/ One key clarification comes in the "important note" included at the beginning of the license agreement. Previously, the note read:blockquoteIf you charge a fee for any book or other work you generate using this software (a “Work”), you may only sell or distribute such Work through Apple (e.g., through the iBookstore) and such distribution will be subject to a separate agreement with Apple./blockquoteApple has now clarified the note to read:blockquoteIf you want to charge a fee for a work that includes files in the .ibooks format generated using iBooks Author, you may only sell or distribute such work through Apple, and such distribution will be subject to a separate agreement with Apple. Apple's Share of Profits Among Top Mobile Phone Vendors Hits 75%

Samsung followed in second place with 16% of industry profits while no other vendor accounted for more than 4% of profits.blockquoteApple reached 75% of profit share, nearly 40% of revenue share and 9% of units share. br/ br/ Apple and Samsung combined for about 91% of profits with RIM third at 3.7%, HTC fourth at 3.0% and Nokia last at 1.8% of a #36;15 billion total for the quarter./blockquoteDediu's analysis covers eight top mobile phone vendors: Apple, Samsung, Nokia, Research in Motion, HTC, LG, Motorola, and Sony Ericsson. While the numbers do not include a few major players such as China's ZTE for which public numbers are not available, his analysis does provide a relatively solid picture of the industry. br/ br/ img src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/02/asymco_q411_iphone_share.jpg" alt="" title="asymco_q411_iphone_share" width="560" height="313" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-335581" / br/ According to Dediu's numbers, Apple has held the top spot in profits for 13 quarters in row since overtaking Nokia, and now dominates the industry with its 75% share of profits. Snow Leopard Security Update Kills PowerPC Apps Using Rosetta

Fri, 2012-02-03 10:49

But as noted in several discussions at Apple's forums (a href="https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3703894"1/a, a href="https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3706294"2/a, a href="https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3704759"3/a) and elsewhere, users are experiencing a variety of problems with Rosetta apps following the update, including repeated crashes when trying to use any commands from the applications' main dropdown menus. br/ br/ Users are reporting a significant number of applications being affected by the issue, including Microsoft Office X and 2004, older versions of Adobe Photoshop, Quicken, Filemaker 7, and various other applications that had been written to run on PowerPC chips used in Apple's older machines. br/ br/ With Apple's transition to Intel, the company developed the Rosetta framework to allow those applications to continue to function on new hardware. Apple has discontinued Rosetta in OS X Lion, but it was still included as an optional install in Mac OS X Snow Leopard and a number of users have continued to use PowerPC applications on those systems either because they do not wish to upgrade or because newer versions are simply not available. br/ br/ As a href="https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3706348"noted in the Apple discussion forums/a, one user has worked to a href="http://www.educate-it.org/content.php?130-Rosetta-Issue-after-Security-Update-2012-001"create a patch/a to address the issue, but the patch does not yet appear to work for all Rosetta applications.blockquoteThis is a band-aid and is only recommended in emergency situations. Apple is currently working on a fix, but until that happens, we are stuck with reverse-engineering their update. I hope this helps those in distress from this update./blockquoteThose who have spoken to Apple customer service about the issue have received varying responses, from notes that the company doesn't yet know what the problem is to claims that there is no issue and that Rosetta support has simply been discontinued, with the latter being unlikely to be true given that the change occurred with a minor security update.br/ br/ br/ bRecent Mac and iOS Blog Stories/bbr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/id-softwares-rage-arrives-on-mac-app-store/"Id Software#039;s RAGE Arrives on Mac App Store/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/the-daily-reports-100000-paying-subs-on-one-year-anniverary/"#039;The Daily#039; Reports 100,000 Paying Subs on One-Year Anniversary/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/safari-5-1-4-with-javascript-and-pdf-handling-improvements-seeded-to-developers/"Safari 5.1.4 with JavaScript and PDF Handling Improvements Seeded to Developers/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/apple-grabs-another-gaming-pr-executive-for-app-store/"Apple Grabs Another Gaming PR Executive for App Store/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/01/apple-hardware-chief-bob-mansfield-cashes-in-nearly-12-5-million-in-stock-options/"Apple Hardware Chief Bob Mansfield Cashes in Nearly #36;12.5 Million in Stock Options/abr/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/5RNJ7LykGMjN68Nby9NuzBTV-l4/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/5RNJ7LykGMjN68Nby9NuzBTV-l4/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/5RNJ7LykGMjN68Nby9NuzBTV-l4/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/5RNJ7LykGMjN68Nby9NuzBTV-l4/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=Z-Vd6zWKrvY:5rw-ikUYvKc:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=Z-Vd6zWKrvY:5rw-ikUYvKc:6W8y8wAjSf4"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=6W8y8wAjSf4" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=Z-Vd6zWKrvY:5rw-ikUYvKc:qj6IDK7rITs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/MacRumors-Front/~4/Z-Vd6zWKrvY" height="1" width="1"/

Apple Pulls All 3G Devices Except iPhone 4S from German Online Store Following Motorola Patent Win [Updated]

iMessages Going to Wrong iPhone "Isn't a Bug" Claims Apple

Thu, 2012-02-02 13:34
In December, an apparent bug a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/12/15/imessage-bug-sends-texts-to-stolen-iphones/"appeared in Apple's iMessage service/a that allowed iMessages to be sent to a stolen iPhone. Earlier this week, emGizmodo/em reported that a customer who went to Apple's Genius Bar a href="http://gizmodo.com/5880593/the-apple-bug-that-let-us-spy-on-a-total-strangers-iphone"began receiving iMessages/a to and from the Genius who helped fix their phone. br/ br/ It appears that the Genius took his personal SIM card and inserted it into the customer's iPhone as part of a series of unofficial and unapproved diagnostic efforts to fix the customer's phone. An Apple representative explained to emThe Loop/em's Jim Dalrymple that the issue in the emGizmodo/em story wasn't a bug, but instead was the result of the Genius a href="http://www.loopinsight.com/2012/02/02/reported-imessage-bug-is-not-a-bug-says-apple/"not following protocol/a. br/ blockquote“This was an extremely rare situation that occurred when a retail employee did not follow the correct service procedure and used their personal SIM to help a customer who did not have a working SIM,” Apple representative Natalie Harrison told The Loop. “This resulted in a temporary situation that has since been resolved by the employee.”/blockquoteThe act of installing an employee's personal SIM card into a customer's iPhone is obviously not an approved procedure at the Genius Bar. However, the fact that the Genius wasn't supposed to perform this act does not mean that this was merely an "extremely rare situation". br/ br/ In the a href="http://gizmodo.com/5880593/the-apple-bug-that-let-us-spy-on-a-total-strangers-iphone"Gizmodo situation/a, a customer was having difficulties with her iPhone 4 and took it to the Genius Bar to be serviced. When it was returned, the phone was in perfect working order, except for one thing: it displayed every incoming and outgoing iMessage meant for the Genius. Because he had inserted his personal SIM card into the iPhone during the diagnostic process, it registered with Apple's iMessage servers and began sending all of his messages to the customer's phone. br/ br/ img src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/02/stolenphone.jpg" alt="" title="stolenphone" width="560" height="181" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-335517" / br/ A number of customers have reported similar iMessage issues, including messages continuing to go to a stolen iPhone a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/12/15/imessage-bug-sends-texts-to-stolen-iphones/"after a remote wipe and a SIM card deactivation/a. This is obviously an unintended action, and though Apple a href="http://www.loopinsight.com/2012/02/02/reported-imessage-bug-is-not-a-bug-says-apple/"explains/a the solution to be "toggle iMessage on and off" in the Settings app, that is an impossible act to perform remotely on a stolen phone. br/ br/ (emImage via a href="http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/12/stolen-iphone-your-imessages-may-still-be-going-to-the-wrong-place.ars"Ars Technica/a/em)br/ br/ br/ bRecent Mac and iOS Blog Stories/bbr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/apple-grabs-another-gaming-pr-executive-for-app-store/"Apple Grabs Another Gaming PR Executive for App Store/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/01/apple-hardware-chief-bob-mansfield-cashes-in-nearly-12-5-million-in-stock-options/"Apple Hardware Chief Bob Mansfield Cashes in Nearly #36;12.5 Million in Stock Options/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/dexim-visible-green-iphone-cable-makes-charging-more-visible/"Dexim Visible Green iPhone Cable Makes Charging More Visible/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/steam-companion-iphone-app-now-available-to-all-users/"Steam Companion iPhone App Now Available to All Users/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/explore-strange-new-worlds-with-sir-benfros-brilliant-balloon/"Explore Strange New Worlds With Sir Benfro#039;s Brilliant Balloon/abr/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/unYubKNtFh4FHmZPNUQeNJRF8RY/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/unYubKNtFh4FHmZPNUQeNJRF8RY/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/unYubKNtFh4FHmZPNUQeNJRF8RY/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/unYubKNtFh4FHmZPNUQeNJRF8RY/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=72w8XQtGWbQ:8eDWPCtB6o4:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=72w8XQtGWbQ:8eDWPCtB6o4:6W8y8wAjSf4"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=6W8y8wAjSf4" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=72w8XQtGWbQ:8eDWPCtB6o4:qj6IDK7rITs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/MacRumors-Front/~4/72w8XQtGWbQ" height="1" width="1"/

Apple's Town Hall Meeting Emphasized Corporate Philanthropy

Apple Poised to Benefit from U.S. Government's Five-Year Push for Digital Textbooks

Thu, 2012-02-02 10:55
a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Challenge-schools-Embracing-apf-3730035119.html"The Associated Press reports/a on a new initiative from the U.S. government to help push schools and textbook companies make the transition to digital textbooks over the next five years. With Apple pushing itself to the forefront of the digital textbook discussion with its a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/19/apple-launches-ibooks-2-with-interactive-textbooks/"iBooks Textbooks launch/a just two weeks ago, the company stands to significantly benefit if its iPad hardware becomes a primary tool in the move to digital textbooks.blockquoteEducation Secretary Arne Duncan and Federal Communications Commission chairman Julius Genachowski on Wednesday challenged schools and companies to get digital textbooks in students' hands within five years. [...] br/ br/ Tied to Wednesday's announcement at a digital town hall was the government's release of a 67-page "playbook" to schools that promotes the use of digital textbooks and offers guidance. The administration hopes that dollars spent on traditional textbooks can instead go toward making digital learning more feasible./blockquoteThe report notes that the K-12 textbook industry is an #36;8 billion per year market in the U.S. and that textbook companies have been working for a number of years on digital initiatives. The primary roadblock, according to the textbook publishers, has been that schools simply don't have the hardware necessary to make the full commitment to digital learning. br/ br/ img src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/02/ibooks_textbooks_library_store.jpg" alt="" title="ibooks_textbooks_library_store" width="560" height="395" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-335483" / br/ With the iPad starting at #36;499, pricing is undoubtedly still a significant hurdle for schools that will need to purchase the devices in significant quantities, although Apple has been rumored to be looking to bring the entry-level pricing down in the coming months by continuing to offer the iPad 2 alongside the new iPad 3.br/ br/ br/ bRecent Mac and iOS Blog Stories/bbr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/01/apple-hardware-chief-bob-mansfield-cashes-in-nearly-12-5-million-in-stock-options/"Apple Hardware Chief Bob Mansfield Cashes in Nearly #36;12.5 Million in Stock Options/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/dexim-visible-green-iphone-cable-makes-charging-more-visible/"Dexim Visible Green iPhone Cable Makes Charging More Visible/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/steam-companion-iphone-app-now-available-to-all-users/"Steam Companion iPhone App Now Available to All Users/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/explore-strange-new-worlds-with-sir-benfros-brilliant-balloon/"Explore Strange New Worlds With Sir Benfro#039;s Brilliant Balloon/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/nasa-releases-sector-33-air-traffic-control-game/"NASA Releases quot;Sector 33quot; Air Traffic Control Game/abr/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/0Pn25ZTOgMgZhv-JpdNVzOXFHkw/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/0Pn25ZTOgMgZhv-JpdNVzOXFHkw/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/0Pn25ZTOgMgZhv-JpdNVzOXFHkw/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/0Pn25ZTOgMgZhv-JpdNVzOXFHkw/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=K0beV-ci7hc:-Yi9-xOoOO0:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=K0beV-ci7hc:-Yi9-xOoOO0:6W8y8wAjSf4"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=6W8y8wAjSf4" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=K0beV-ci7hc:-Yi9-xOoOO0:qj6IDK7rITs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/MacRumors-Front/~4/K0beV-ci7hc" height="1" width="1"/

OS X 10.7.3 Update 'CUI Error' Fixable in Many Cases with Combo Version

Thu, 2012-02-02 10:15
Following yesterday's a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/01/apple-releases-os-x-10-7-3-with-new-language-support-and-bug-fixes/"release of OS X 10.7.3/a, a number of users in a href="http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1317887"our forums/a and at a href="https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3703113"Apple's discussion forums/a began reporting issues with the update. The most serious of these issues seems to be widespread crashing of apps generally accompanied by an artwork error in the crash notice window in which the window's buttons are replaced with graphics showing "CUI" and question marks. br/ br/ img src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/02/cui_10_7_3.jpg" alt="" title="cui_10_7_3" width="560" height="420" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-335474" / br/ In general, users have found that applying the a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1484"combo version/a of the OS X 10.7.3 update rather than the standard delta version typically offered via Software Update will fix the issues. The combo update can even be applied over an existing installation that is exhibiting the problem. br/ br/ With the crashing issues perhaps causing users difficulties in applying the combo update to fix the problem, iOS X Daily/i provides a a href="http://osxdaily.com/2012/02/01/fix-mac-os-x-10-7-3-update-problems-cui-errors-stuck-installs-and-crashes/"nice summary/a of how this can be accomplished:blockquoteThe simple formula is this: br/ br/ - Download Mac OS X 10.7.3 Combo Updater (a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1484"direct link/a) br/ - Run the 10.7.3 Combo Updater on top of the existing 10.7.3 installation br/ - Reboot br/ br/ If you can’t get to the desktop of the Mac in question, you can a href="http://osxdaily.com/2010/04/07/how-to-boot-a-mac-in-target-disk-mode/"boot it with Target Disk Mode/a (Firewire or Thunderbolt required), and then point the 10.7.3 Combo Update at the troubled Mac and install it that way. If your OS X installation is totally screwed up and you can’t use target disk mode, you have a few choices: br/ br/ 1. Restore from a recent pre-10.7.3 Time Machine backup, then install the Combo Updater br/ 2. Avid Takes on Apple's iMovie with Avid Studio for iPad

While companies such as Avid and Adobe have attempted to capitalize on Apple's Final Cut Pro X missteps by wooing users in need of professional video editing and production software, a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120201/avid-brings-its-pro-sumer-video-editing-app-to-ipad/"iAllThingsD/i notes/a that Avid is pushing forward on the mobile "prosumer" front with its just-launched a href="http://www.appshopper.com/photography/avid-studio"iAvid Studio/i/a [a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/avid-studio/id491113378?mt=8"App Store/a] app for iPad. br/ br/ img src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/02/avid_studio_ipad_1.jpg" alt="" title="avid_studio_ipad_1" width="480" height="351" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-335465" / br/ The iPad obviously imposes some limitations on what can be done with the software compared with the full a href="http://www.avid.com/US/products/Avid-Studio"Avid Studio/a for Windows, but Avid suggests that it is full-featured enough to be used for editing on the go and is ideally suited as a companion to the desktop app.blockquoteThe idea is that the iPad app and the desktop software are complementary, [Avid vice president Tanguy] Leborgne said, so that users who want to create and edit projects on the go can do so, but ultimately preserve them by taking them to the PC. br/ br/ The Avid iPad app does have some nice features, including an interface that includes a storyboard area and an editing timeline. And while some video editors rely heavily on customized keyboards or a mouse, others might appreciate the ability to pinch and squeeze videos and images to scale them on the touchscreen of the iPad, or the ability to move text and titles around with their fingers./blockquoteimg src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/02/avid_studio_ipad_2.jpg" alt="" title="avid_studio_ipad_2" width="480" height="351" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-335466" / br/ Avid Studio for iPad is launching with an introductory price tag of #36;4.99, which will increase to #36;7.99 after the first month.br/ br/ br/ bRecent Mac and iOS Blog Stories/bbr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/01/apple-hardware-chief-bob-mansfield-cashes-in-nearly-12-5-million-in-stock-options/"Apple Hardware Chief Bob Mansfield Cashes in Nearly #36;12.5 Million in Stock Options/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/dexim-visible-green-iphone-cable-makes-charging-more-visible/"Dexim Visible Green iPhone Cable Makes Charging More Visible/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/steam-companion-iphone-app-now-available-to-all-users/"Steam Companion iPhone App Now Available to All Users/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/explore-strange-new-worlds-with-sir-benfros-brilliant-balloon/"Explore Strange New Worlds With Sir Benfro#039;s Brilliant Balloon/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/nasa-releases-sector-33-air-traffic-control-game/"NASA Releases quot;Sector 33quot; Air Traffic Control Game/abr/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/_adsf-jzsM5qqmypTyigfyt_c3k/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/_adsf-jzsM5qqmypTyigfyt_c3k/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/_adsf-jzsM5qqmypTyigfyt_c3k/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/_adsf-jzsM5qqmypTyigfyt_c3k/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=vEezQcx1mUo:l0pJKwkUKX0:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=vEezQcx1mUo:l0pJKwkUKX0:6W8y8wAjSf4"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=6W8y8wAjSf4" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=vEezQcx1mUo:l0pJKwkUKX0:qj6IDK7rITs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/MacRumors-Front/~4/vEezQcx1mUo" height="1" width="1"/

iPad 3 Event in March, An 'Unusual' Apple Event in February?

Analyst Expects iPhone 5 to Launch at WWDC 2012 in June

Thu, 2012-02-02 04:31
The emCommercial Times/em a href="http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20120202PB201.html"relays/a a report from Daiwa Securities that the iPhone 5 is expected to launch at Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) to be held in June 2012. Daiwa Securities also claims that the iPhone 5 will utilize "glass to glass" touch panel technology which will benefit TPK Holding and Wintek. br/ br/ The summer launch claim is not new and has been a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/11/18/march-launch-for-slightly-thicker-ipad-3-iphone-with-4-inch-screen-in-summer/"echoed/a in previous reports. So this could simply be a parroting of previous rumors. br/ br/ Apple broke from tradition with the iPhone 4S by launching it in October of 2011. Previous iPhone launches have occurred at Apple's annual WWDC conference. br/ br/ img src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/02/wwdc.png" alt="" title="wwdc" width="527" height="334" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-335435" / br/ The official dates for the 2012 conference have not yet been announced, but a a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/15/wwdc-2012-already-scheduled-for-june-11th-15th/"previously leaked/a guide suggested June 10th-15th as the likely dates. Moscone's a href="http://www.moscone.com/site/do/event/list?nav.type=0nav.filter=1206nav.base=1206"event calendar/a has those corresponding dates blocked off for a "Corporate Meeting" which typically acts as a placeholder for WWDC. br/ br/ br/ bRecent Mac and iOS Blog Stories/bbr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/01/apple-hardware-chief-bob-mansfield-cashes-in-nearly-12-5-million-in-stock-options/"Apple Hardware Chief Bob Mansfield Cashes in Nearly #36;12.5 Million in Stock Options/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/dexim-visible-green-iphone-cable-makes-charging-more-visible/"Dexim Visible Green iPhone Cable Makes Charging More Visible/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/steam-companion-iphone-app-now-available-to-all-users/"Steam Companion iPhone App Now Available to All Users/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/explore-strange-new-worlds-with-sir-benfros-brilliant-balloon/"Explore Strange New Worlds With Sir Benfro#039;s Brilliant Balloon/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/nasa-releases-sector-33-air-traffic-control-game/"NASA Releases quot;Sector 33quot; Air Traffic Control Game/abr/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/C0Bh-Tvc7_DHermFBjSRItPIPrg/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/C0Bh-Tvc7_DHermFBjSRItPIPrg/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/C0Bh-Tvc7_DHermFBjSRItPIPrg/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/C0Bh-Tvc7_DHermFBjSRItPIPrg/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=x1Obci0l7XY:pTjlV7jrq0w:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=x1Obci0l7XY:pTjlV7jrq0w:6W8y8wAjSf4"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=6W8y8wAjSf4" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=x1Obci0l7XY:pTjlV7jrq0w:qj6IDK7rITs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/MacRumors-Front/~4/x1Obci0l7XY" height="1" width="1"/

Apple Passes LG to Become World's Third Largest Mobile Phone Manufacturer

Wed, 2012-02-01 22:34
Research firm IDC today a href="http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS23297412"released its estimates/a of global mobile phone sales for the fourth quarter of and full-year 2011, finding Apple moving past LG to claim third place in the rankings for the first time. Apple was a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/07/28/apple-closing-on-lg-for-title-of-third-largest-mobile-phone-vendor-with-142-growth/"rapidly closing/a on LG by mid-2010, but fell back into fifth place behind ZTE during the third quarter as customers held off in anticipation of new iPhone hardware. The strong surge from the iPhone 4S launch was then enough for Apple to move up in the year's final quarter and by a large enough margin that it was able pass LG in full-year numbers as well. br/ br/ centerimg src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/02/idc_4Q11_phones.jpg" br/ iWorldwide Mobile Phone Sales in 4Q11 in Millions of Units (Source: IDC)/i/center br/ While Apple has been estimated to be neck-and-neck with Samsung for the crown of top smartphone manufacturer, Nokia and Samsung firmly hold down the top two spots in the overall mobile phone rankings on the volume of their lower-end feature phones.blockquoteApple jumped into the third spot globally from the fifth spot last quarter thanks to a record-breaking quarter of shipments. That represents the Cupertino-based company's highest-ever ranking on IDC's Top 5 global mobile phone leaderboard. The launch of Apple's iPhone 4S smartphone, which is now available in over 90 countries (as of mid-January), was the primary reason the company leapt over LG and ZTE in 4Q11. Device sales in the U.S. and Japan were particularly strong given extra sales days in the quarter and carrier distribution./blockquoteApple's share of the market hit 8.7% in the fourth quarter and registered at 6.0% for the full year. Steve Jobs famously noted during the iPhone's 2007 introduction that Apple was shooting to take 1% of the massive overall mobile phone market, and the company has clearly exceeded that goal and can now set its sights on a 10% quarterly share during the next spike in sales. br/ br/ centerimg src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/02/idc_2011_phones.jpg" br/ iWorldwide Mobile Phone Sales in 2011 in Millions of Units (Source: IDC)/i/center br/ One year ago, Apple a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/01/28/apple-slips-to-fifth-in-global-mobile-phone-share-as-zte-surges/"ranked fifth/a in both fourth quarter and full-year sales for 2010, but by nearly doubling its sales year-over-year Apple was able to overtake both ZTE and LG to move into third place.br/ br/ br/ bRecent Mac and iOS Blog Stories/bbr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/01/apple-hardware-chief-bob-mansfield-cashes-in-nearly-12-5-million-in-stock-options/"Apple Hardware Chief Bob Mansfield Cashes in Nearly #36;12.5 Million in Stock Options/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/dexim-visible-green-iphone-cable-makes-charging-more-visible/"Dexim Visible Green iPhone Cable Makes Charging More Visible/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/steam-companion-iphone-app-now-available-to-all-users/"Steam Companion iPhone App Now Available to All Users/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/explore-strange-new-worlds-with-sir-benfros-brilliant-balloon/"Explore Strange New Worlds With Sir Benfro#039;s Brilliant Balloon/abr/ bull; a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/nasa-releases-sector-33-air-traffic-control-game/"NASA Releases quot;Sector 33quot; Air Traffic Control Game/abr/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/mKTXxFxDKMNe04cS3dkMfMIBPZU/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/mKTXxFxDKMNe04cS3dkMfMIBPZU/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/mKTXxFxDKMNe04cS3dkMfMIBPZU/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/mKTXxFxDKMNe04cS3dkMfMIBPZU/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=PLco-cQQOoA:KuYWAQckVIs:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=PLco-cQQOoA:KuYWAQckVIs:6W8y8wAjSf4"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=6W8y8wAjSf4" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.macrumors.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?a=PLco-cQQOoA:KuYWAQckVIs:qj6IDK7rITs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/MacRumors-Front?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/MacRumors-Front/~4/PLco-cQQOoA" height="1" width="1"/

Apple's Hiring of an Outsider is Out of Character

Wed, 2012-02-01 17:00
Earlier this week, Tim Cook announced the a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/apple-announces-john-browett-as-senior-vice-president-of-retail/"hiring of John Browett/a to replace Ron Johnson as the Senior Vice President of Retail at Apple. After spending more than 10 years at Apple, building the world's most successful retail chain from scratch, a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/11/01/retail-chief-ron-johnson-departs-apple-for-j-c-penney-no-successor-named/"Johnson was appointed CEO at JC Penney/a with the difficult task of turning around one of the country's most well-known department stores. br/ br/ Johnson announced his departure from Apple in June of 2011 and by August Apple's recruiters were in full-swing looking for a replacement. Curiously, for a company where nearly the a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/bios/"entire executive team/a is home-grown, reports emerged that Apple was using executive search-firm Egon Zehnder to assist with finding the perfect candidate. The emWall Street Journal/em a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/08/03/apples-search-for-new-retail-chief-extending-internationally/"reported/a that Steve Jobs, at the time still on medical leave, was intimately involved in the decision to hire an outside firm "mainly because he wants to consider executives who are based abroad." br/ br/ img src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/02/hamburgstore.jpg" alt="" title="hamburgstore" width="560" height="400" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-335395" / br/ The entire executive team at Apple, aside from the just-hired Browett and a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/bios/bruce-sewell.html"Bruce Sewell/a, Apple's general counsel, has been with the company for more than 10 years. Aside from the general counsel position, Apple's leadership team has remained fairly consistent through the second Steve Jobs era. br/ br/ Of nearly two dozen current and former executives, only a bare handful were hired from outside the company rather than being promoted from within, and only one -- general counsel Bruce Sewell -- is still with the firm. Apple's most famous crash-and-burn external hire was that of Mark Papermaster, a long-time IBMer who was hired by Apple in 2008 as Senior Vice President for Devices Hardware Engineering. After a lengthy court battle with IBM a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2008/10/30/apple-recruits-ibm-chip-designer-ibm-files-lawsuit/"over a non-compete clause/a he had signed, he was put in charge of the teams behind the iPod and iPhone, and presumably the early development of the iPad as well. br/ br/ Papermaster finally started work at Apple on April 24, 2009, nearly six months after he was originally hired. He a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2010/08/07/iphone-hardware-engineering-chief-mark-papermaster-leaves-apple/"left the company/a after only 15 months, just after the a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2010/07/16/coverage-of-apples-iphone-4-press-conference/"Antennagate scandal/a. br/ br/ He was in charge of the division that created the iPhone 4, and Papermaster's departure would seem to be that of an executive who fell on his sword over perceived issues with Apple's flagship product. However, Adam Lashinsky's book ema href="http://www.amazon.com/Inside-Apple-Americas-Admired-Secretive-Company/dp/145551215X"Inside Apple/a/em notes that there was more to it than a simple product miscue. Papermaster's years at IBM left him ill-prepared for the aggressive corporate culture at the top of Apple. br/ blockquoteSteve Jobs was on medical leave when Papermaster, who declined repeated requests to be interviewed, started at Apple. By the time Jobs returned, the word on Papermaster was that he wasn't fitting in. He wasn't seen as fighting hard for his division, a requisite internally. "Papermaster is a really nice guy, proverbially the guy you'd want to have a beer with," said someone who interacted with him during his time at Apple. "He is warm, patient, and willing to listen--just not the right qualities for Apple. It was so painfully obvious to everyone." It was said that when he came back to work, Jobs paid little attention to Papermaster, meaning the new executive had achieved "bozo" status in the founder's exacting judgement."/blockquoteimg src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/02/executiveteam.jpg" alt="" title="executiveteam" width="560" height="328" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-335406" / br/ emInside Apple/em is full of tales of the unique culture at Apple, such as the lack of profit-and-loss reports for individual divisions, like those that exist at most large companies. Apple's idiosyncratic culture and the complete lack of external hires at the top -- plus the short life-spans of those that have been tried -- mean John Browett, currently the CEO of European technology retailer Dixons Retail, could be in for a bumpy ride. br/ br/ img src="http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/02/browett-150x224.jpg" alt="" title="browett-150x224" width="150" height="224" class="alignright size-full wp-image-335402" /From both Apple's press release a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/01/31/apple-announces-john-browett-as-senior-vice-president-of-retail/"announcing the move/a and an email Tim Cook a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/01/tim-cook-on-new-retail-chief-john-browett-the-best-by-far/"sent to an Apple customer/a about Browett's hire, it's clear that Apple is not hiring Browett for his experience at Dixons. Browett's hire has raised some concerns from Apple fans because of poor shopping experiences at the different retailers he was in charge of. Instead, Cook is hiring Browett for his enthusiasm for amazing customer service -- something Apple puts a lot of stock in -- as well as his international expertise. br/ br/ John Browett is Tim Cook's first major hire as CEO, and a lot of analysts and Apple fans will be watching to see how it plays out. Though it is likely Steve Jobs had extensive input on the process both before he resigned as CEO and before he passed away, Tim Cook is indisputably in charge. br/ br/ The first Apple Store opened in 2001, more than 10 years ago. Apple Retail's second 10 years are called the "decade of significance" within the company.
